The Trinidad & Tobago Rugby Union (TTRU) is known for its consistent participation in regional competition. Having had the privilege of being the hosts to the international Commonwealth Youth Games, we are more motivated than ever to ensure the prioritisation of our local rugby in Trinidad and Tobago.
Ruggerama, the traditional Rugby 15s Season Opener, which was delayed to accommodate preparations for international 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games Rugby 7s Competition, brought out athletes in their numbers at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain on Saturday, August 19, 2023. Despite challenges brought on by the inclement weather, the determination and enthusiasm of all participants; teams, clubs, committees, and of course the fans remained undiminished. It is this spirit of resilience that defines our beloved sport, and what made this year’s opening tournament a success.
Ruggerama is a springboard from which our local rugby teams launch. We are able to assess our numbers and needs to tailor our local fixtures to best present our product and ensure that our athletes get the most of what they love to do best. Hungry to play, our athletes came out in abundance for the Men’s and Women’s Divisions. Even more came out to support and cheer on the teams. If this turnout is any indication, we are set to experience a 4th quarter teeming with camaraderie, fierce competition and unforgettable moments on the rugby field.
The Women’s matches were between Select Teams to ensure the inclusion of our growing player base and the result was a win-win for everyone. In the Men’s Division, Caribs emerged victorious taking 1st place, followed by Trinidad Northern, Royalians, Police, Defence Force, and Harvard. The top try scorer of the tournament was Richard Staglon from Caribs, which was no small feat, as all the men played to the max, knowing that their performance in this tournament could secure them a place on the Men’s National 15s Team which is set to play USA South on Saturday, August 26, 2023, right here at home. This event will be a double header, also featuring a match between the Trinidad & Tobago and USA South Men’s Under 23 National 15s Teams.
A massive thanks to the ‘behind the scenes team’ who committed to preserving the integrity of Ruggerama and the core values it represents for our game. We look forward to seeing our tried and true, as well as new fans out to support our Men on Saturday!
