USA lifted the Americas Rugby Championship trophy for the second year running after an emphatic 61-19 victory over Uruguay in Montevideo on Saturday.
The Eagles, who’ve impressed throughout the competition, saved their best performance to last, scoring nine tries against the early competition leaders.
USA’s win meant that Argentina XV could not finish top, but they secured second place for the second year in a row with a 28-8 win over South American neighbours Brazil.
Earlier in the day, Canada rounded off their campaign with a 33-17 victory over Chile.
World Rugby vice Chairman and Americas Rugby President Agustín Pichot said: “I would like to congratulate USA on a deserved Americas Rugby Championship title, they’ve been superb throughout.
“But all the teams and their fans deserve praise. This was undoubtedly the bigg
est and best Championship to date, showcasing the depth of rugby talent and passion for the sport in the Americas at a time when the region is experiencing record participation & fan growth.
“This tournament plays an important high-performance role for the participating unions, but it’s also establishing itself as an attractive and exciting sporting brand in the Americas. We look forward to an even bigger competition in 2019.”
With ESPN broadcasting the championship in the Americas and World Rugby live streaming matches on digital and social media outside of the region, the championship enjoyed record reach and engagement.
It has so far generated video views of more than six million, with more than 50 per cent of the total engaged audience in South America, while the compelling action proved popular with the youth audience in particular as Instagram delivered more than two thirds of all video views.
